There could be snow in New York City and New England

The Boston Metro Area is Getting More Snow and Cold during the First Snow Event of the Cold War with the New York State Department of Meteorology

Extreme weather events such as nor’ easters, which form on the East Coast with powerful winds from the northeast, may be happening more frequently and increasing in strength due to climate change.

It could be the lightest snow in several years, according to officials in multiple states. Parts of New York City may see 6 inches of snow and parts of Boston could get 8 inches of snow.

As much as 2 inches per hour is possible on Tuesday in some areas of central Pennsylvania and southern New England.

Boston City Hall and all public schools are closed on Tuesday due to a snow emergency, as well as a parking ban on major roads.

“With the arrival of our first major snowstorm this winter, City teams are prepared to clear our roadways and respond to any emergencies during the storm,” Wu said in a statement.

“Please be aware of parking restrictions so that we can clear the roads as quickly as possible, and check on your neighbors, family, and friends to be sure everyone has a plan to stay inside and stay safe,” she added.

The National Weather Service predicts that heavy snow and strong winds will damage trees and power lines, and disrupt travel.

Moderate coastal flooding is possible Tuesday night at high tide along the Jersey Shore, as well as in parts of New York and New England.

On Monday, the storm system was tracking through the Southeast and the Ohio Valley. Meteorologists predicted up to 6 inches of snow in parts of the Ozarks, as well as showers and thunderstorms across the Southeast.

The Oklahoma City metro area saw several inches of snowfall overnight Sunday, with a small area near Lawton in southwest Oklahoma receiving between 8 inches to a foot of snow, the NWS said.

The new storm system will cause a lot of rain in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. The storm will cause snow to accumulate farther inland over higher terrain, eventually hitting the northern Rockies.

The mayor of the city advised people to stay off the roads, as snow and cold could make driving hazardous through Wednesday.
